How to Truly Love One Another: Lessons from 1 John 4

Title: The Command to Love One Another
Speaker: Pastor Jeno
Scripture Focus: 1 John 4:11
As believers in Christ, learning how to truly love one another is the most profound calling we have. In the book of First John, the apostle emphasizes that our faith is made visible through our charity and compassion. Imagine a bonfire burning brightly in the dark. When the pieces of wood are gathered together, they produce a strong fire that provides intense heat and brilliant light. However, if you take one piece of wood and set it aside by itself, its flame will quickly die out. This is a beautiful picture of our fellowship. When we gather together and love one another, the light of God shines brightly through us.
The True Source of Love
To understand what it means to care for our brethren, we must first look to the Creator. God is the very author and source of love. The world often defines love as a selfish or conditional feeling; however, biblical love is entirely different. It is an unconditional, agape choice. We can only show this true charity because He first loved us.
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” (1 John 4:11)
Why We Must Love One Another Today
Our obedience to this command is the proper response to God’s ultimate sacrifice. God shewed His great love toward us by sending His only begotten Son into the world. When we consider the depth of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, our natural response should be to love one another with a pure heart. Here are three reasons why this is essential for every believer:
- It proves our relationship with God: Our charity is the greatest evidence that we are born of God and know Him intimately.
- It reflects His perfect sacrifice: Since Christ gave His life for us, we ought to lay down our selfish desires for our brethren.
- It is a direct commandment: Jesus explicitly commanded us to love exactly as He loved us.
Revealing God to the World
No man has seen God at any time. Yet when we choose to love one another, the invisible God becomes visible to those around us. His presence dwells within our fellowship, and His perfect love is manifested in our actions. Let us not simply speak of charity, but live it out daily in our homes, workplaces, and church family.
